BEAR MOUNTAIN LODGE - April 2024

The Gila Wilderness turns 100 years old in June!

Lots of book news and lots of great menus.

LODGE NEWS:

The Kopit family is coming in October, not November. So, Thanksgiving hotel reservations are open again.

We had a small world moment this week. The Diamond A Ranch folk were here for an event. As they were checking out, someone mentioned Mongolia.

WELL, it turned out we all know the same family in Mongolia.

It is a small world, especially for horse lovers and Mongolia.

CAFE NEWS:

April 13th, Saturday is the Cajun Dinner 6pm Yum!

April 20th, Saturday is Wine Pairing Dinner with some local Hazy Farm Cheddar cheese

April 26th "Think a Recipe"- luncheon- we will have an entree, side, and dessert.

We will discuss what we like about each course and not like.

We will edit the recipes to create a great course and try them the next month.

"Think a Recipe" will be the 4th Friday of each month.

Reservations are a must and the menus are online.

GALLERY NEWS:

Chris McDaniel made some very fun wall hangings.

Perfect for a touch of warmth and happiness in a room.

Let us know if you'd like to see pictures. One is featured below.

We are excited, we have commissioned Paul Wilson to make a weather vane for the barn. It will feature a standard poodle with an owl riding it.

We hope to use the old windmill fantails bullet holes and all in the piece.

July Clayfest workshop here at the Lodge with feature Javier Cervantes.

He is a clay sculptor from Oaxaca. His work is comprised of sophisticated clay forms with an elegant minimal surface treatments.

The workshop will teach hand building and the application of terra sigillata. The pieces will be pit fired. The soft effects terra sigillata on the work combined with pit firing is a perfect match.

The class will be posted on the Silver City Clay Festival next week for more details.

If you'd like to participate in Javier's workshop please email or call the Lodge to enroll.

We will update you on the signing date.

April's New Mexico Magazine features the GILA 100 on the cover and with an article . Very exciting and beautiful. Plus the Lodge has a small feature in it.

Bear Mountain Lodge's Cookbook is off to the printers. Yahoo-eeeee. (finally)

Steve Havill has a new mystery out in print this month-"Perfect Opportunity".

One of the series of New Mexico Posadas County Mysteries.

BARN NEWS:

Green grass has started to appear. The horses and cows are very happy.

The lizards are starting to be about on the grounds.

Mui Mui, the cat is spending less time sleeping in front of the fireplace.

We'll put up the hummingbird feeders next week.

We have seen bluebirds. A lot of the wild birds come to the chicken coop and snack on the remains of the chicken scratch. An early indicator of which species are on the move.

The Cochin chickens are getting so old some are getting white feathers. We plan on getting some new chicks this year. We are going bantams this time.

WORD OF THE MONTH:

Freebooter-"a lawless adventurer or pirate". Oxford Dictionary

I came across this word in relationship to the Sharp Shinned Hawk in New Mexico Birds circa 1928. The observer of the Sharp Shinned Hawk was not a fan of this fast and quick predator. He called it a freebooter. It made me laugh as I saw one almost get a raven. The hawk was definitely aggressive and swift. But the raven did out maneuver him in the end. Next time I see the Sharp Shinned Hawk, I will imagine him with an eye patch, the jolly roger, and a bottle of rum.

We have had many guests traveling to the eclipse this past week. If you are in its path take time to see it. Nature at one of it's best moments. Hope to see you soon.
